Nouvelles du Brésil - début mai 2020

Aujourd'hui nous partageons avec vous des informations qui nous viennent de frère Dário Bossi de l'organisation Iglesia y Minería, un partenaire de CIDSE:

The health crisis has surpassed any prediction: we already have more deaths from Covid-19 than China; in the past few days we have surpassed the number of 400 died persons per day; it was calculated that the underreporting of the data offers numbers between 2 and 9 times smaller than the reality; the Imperial College of London has demonstrated that Brazil is the country with the highest contagion rate in the world.

The ecological crisis is intensifying violence against Brazil's biomes and populations, because of the reduction of surveillance and control, incentives for deforestation and mining, attacks on indigenous lands and bills to allow mining on their lands (PL 191/20) or regularize land grabbing in the country (MP 910/19).

The social crisis grows as society is increasingly divided, with groups fanatically defending the immediate and full resumption of production and consumption and breaking the lockdown, without any medical and scientific basis. In parallel, violence increases in cities (for example, in Ceará alone in April there were about 400 homicides, most of them adolescents). The lack of consistent and stable subsidies for the poorest families will create chaos and instability in society in the medium term.

The democratic crisis raised the conflict between the executive and the judiciary; many complaints have already been filed for the impeachment of the president. The president himself is stretching the rope and testing all institutions in a progressive tension that reduces the breath of democracy and intensifies prospects for fascist drift. A certain part of the population introjected the culture of violence and fundamentalism and blindly surrendered themselves to the religious veneration of their leader.

In this context, the Presidency of the Brazilian Bishops Conference (CNBB) published today a very strong document (see pdf).

"We are facing the most serious health crisis in recent times, with the health system already entering the collapse phase; we consider this moment very difficult, being called for the effective exercise of solidarity and charity"

"With perplexity and indignation, we see violent demonstrations against measures to prevent coronavirus; we heard biased statements of contempt for life by public officials about the deaths of thousands of Brazilians infected by the covid-19; we saw events that undermine the constitutional order, with the participation of public authorities, defending the closing of the National Congress and the Supreme Federal Court, the return of the AI-5 and the return to the dark times of the dictatorship; all Brazil has heard of complaints about the politicization of justice, injuring its necessary autonomy of investigation".

"Social manifestations that threaten the Constitution are not tolerable, just as it is not tolerable for any authority to violate constitutional precepts and despise life.
Republican institutions, which guarantee the rule of law, are expected to give due accountability to those who attempt against the democratic order".

The situation is very serious; more and more social movements and parties are claiming for the impeachment of the President.

Every day passing without a real political change means many deaths in the short and medium term...

Thanks for your solidarity,

fr. dário
